Lake Bunyonyi

South-Western Uganda, Uganda

"The place of many little birds" — a serene 29-island lake ringed by terraced hills.

At up to 900 m deep, Lake Bunyonyi is one of Africa's deepest lakes and, being bilharzia-free, one of the few where you can safely swim. Dugout canoes glide between 29 islands, each with a story — none more haunting than Punishment Island.
